Getting ready to decorate your home for the holidays? Before you get started, consider the below tips for hanging your Christmas lights. They will make the process easier, quicker and safer for you.
Hang the Lights Before the Bad Weather Arrives
Hanging lights during icy and snowy weather conditions isn’t a good idea. Since our weather conditions can be very unpredictable here in Canada, we recommend starting earlier in the season to ensure you can climb the ladder and avoid any slippery surfaces. If you think it’s too early to hang the lights, consider just prepping the area by hanging up the hooks so you can just pop the lights up when you’re ready.
Test Out the Lights Before Hanging
There’s nothing worse than getting up on the ladder and going through the entire process of hanging and arranging the lights only to realize all or most of them don’t work. Take a few moments to test them out so you can replace any bulbs before getting them up.
Determine How Many Strings You Need
A good rule of thumb is to map out where you plan on hanging the lights and using a tape measure to see if you have enough lights to cover those areas. It makes the process much easier when you know exactly what you need and where they’ll be placed, rather than guessing.
Use LED bulbs
When it’s time to replace your old lights, opt for LED lights. Though they will cost a bit more upfront, they are more energy-efficient and can save electricity and money in the long run. They will last longer too. You can find a wide range of different colour combinations and hues to choose from.
Use Plastic Clips
The goal is to place the lights along the eavestrough. When doing so, use plastic clips that are designed to easily grip onto the gutters. You can also get rope light clips and or adhesive clips which can make it easier when hanging lights around the windows. Keep about 12 inches in between each clip and avoid using staples or nails, this can be dangerous if they pierce the wiring.
