If you’re looking to get crafty this holiday season and really bring out your inner elf, why not create your own holiday wreath? Whether it’s a modern or a timeless look you’re going for, with just a few simple materials you can customize your wreath and tailor your design to what you love. And best of all, you can keep them for years to come and even pass them along as an heirloom throughout your family. Here’s how to get started.
The Supplies
The supplies to create a wreath can be as simple or as extravagant as you want! What you’ll need is some floral wire, good quality craft glue and work gloves to protect your hands from the wires (as well as the sap and needles from the conifer boughs).
Select Wire Frame
At your local home decor and craft store, pick up a wire frame for the base of your wreath. This will support the greenery and all of those decorations you add along to it. There are different types and strengths of wire frames available, so just be sure to choose whichever one you feel will be appropriate for the weight that you’ll be attaching.
Position and Attach Greenery
When you have your greenery selected, make a loose arrangement around the frame to get an idea of how it will all look and fit. Once you’re satisfied, begin wrapping the wire around the stems at least three times. Make sure it is nice and tight. Continue to add and overlap another layer of greenery until you reach the beginning of where you started. Secure the remaining wire under the bundles and cut it. After you’ve completely covered the frame, leave a bit of wire at the top so it can act as the hanger.
Add the Embellishments
Now that you’ve got the base of your wreath done, it’s time to add on any decorations and embellishments that you feel bring out your inner holiday spirit. If you have a love of gold, spray paint a few items and secure them. Whether it’s bows, bulbs, artificial fruit or something a little wild and wacky, add what you like and secure it one with craft glue or even wire.
Once you’ve added all your creative toppings to your wreath, set it aside to allow the glue to fully dry. Then, all that’s left is finding the perfect spot in your home to display it and show off your holiday spirit (and crafty DIY skills) to your family and friends. If you are going to display it outside, make sure all embellishments are attached securely to stand up against the elements.
