In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, we no longer have the luxury of enjoying large gatherings or going out to public places in general, with the exception of essential trips. Because of this, many families are found spending a lot more time together than they are used to. Although neighbourhood walks and sitting outside with your loved ones can be enjoyable, adding a family game night to your weekly routine is a surefire way to spice up your evenings in the safest way possible. Here, we’ve provided some helpful tips to create your own ultimate family game night!
Set A Date & Time
This shouldn’t be an issue considering everyone is already at home (or should be!). However, ensuring everyone is available and aware of the game night is a great start. Pressing tasks and activities may come up, but having all of your family members agree on a set time and day will help you avoid these situations – it may get everyone excited, too!
Choose Your Games
The next and maybe most important step is selecting the best games. You will want to choose games that are appropriate for all ages, that everyone will want to play, and that have an even ratio of players to positions/teams – this will ensure that everyone can play, and everyone will want to. It never hurts to have back-up games too.
Finger Foods Are A Must
Everyone loves to snack – and finger foods pair great with game nights! Skip the full course dinner and opt-in for some easy to eat, mess-free snacks. Although wings may seem like a good idea, it can leave your cards and board games sticky. Veggies and dip, chips, and simple finger foods are a great, effortless option.
Patience
This might go without saying, but staying patient, calm, and “going with the flow” will make your game night go much smoother. Arguing, cheating and breaking the rules might take place, but it’s better to laugh it off instead of getting upset. Remind the family of this too!
Technology-Free Zone
Having a technology-free game night is optional but definitely takes away any possible distractions. It can also give you a nice break from screen time as we are caught spending more time on our phones and tablets while having to stay at home. Putting the phones away for a couple of hours will allow you to fully focus on the quality time spent together!
So go ahead and start planning – this could turn into a weekly tradition! Most importantly, remember to have fun!
