While many people try to escape the cold by flying to warmer destinations or staying bundled up inside, there are the true Canadians who embrace winter and all of the cold, snowy weather it has to offer. Our nation’s capital does a great job of providing activities and events that take advantage of the cold weather. Looking for something the whole family can enjoy that’s cost-effective and still loads of fun? Pack up the car, dress warm, grab your sleds, and head to the hills. In this article, we highlight four of the best places in Ottawa to go tobogganing this winter.
Green’s Creek
One of the more popular hills in Ottawa, located off Bearbrook Road in Orleans, is Green’s Creek hill. This large hill guarantees you’ll be catching lots of speed. The high embankment will keep you and your family safely protected from the river. The hill is well maintained by the City of Ottawa, and parking and outhouses are available. With the hill staying lit until 11 pm, you can make an entire evening out of this!
Mooney’s Bay
Another great location for tobogganing is right on Riverside at Mooney’s Bay. Being one of Ottawa’s largest hills and at a centralized location, Mooney’s Bay makes for a great place to spend your day (or evening!) With multiple runs available, you can choose which speed and steepness you feel the most comfortable with.
Craig Henry Park
This large hill located in Nepean is great for a long, gradual run. You won’t catch the same speed here as some of the other spots listed but you will find available parking. The hill is ideal for families with younger children as it isn’t too large, making it easier for the kids to climb back up. Craig Henry Park isn’t lit in the evening, so we recommend this hill for the daytime tobogganers.
Walter Baker Park
This show-stopping hill located in the west end is one you must check out. Completely man-made and one of the longest runs in Ottawa, this hill provides speed with a steep start. Fast and furious, this hill was made for multiple passenger sleds and anyone looking to slide halfway across the park. Convenient parking is offered, and the hill is completely lit up, making it a great spot to check out at any time.
No matter which hill you end up at, always make sure to slide down safely, dress warm, and be aware of your environment!
