Our very own Ed Hansen was recently featured on the podcast Ottawa Entrepreneurs: Interviews and Insights with Patrick Whalen. Ed sat down with Patrick to discuss the history of Hansen Lawn & Gardens, how he got started in the industry.
“When I started it wasn’t what I thought I was going to be doing, but I fell in love it with it. I fell in love with what I could do at the time for clients, and what I thought we could do for people in general. I love the fact of transformation. I like that fact that we can go in and make a difference for people, and then here we are 27, 28 years later.”
Ed talks about changes in the industry category. “When we first started, realistically it was only the affluent who would take the service – people who could afford it. I think back then, it would have seemed that you were a lesser person if you couldn’t do those sorts of things. However as time as gone on, what’s happened is almost that the pendulum’s gone the complete other way and now it’s what can you do with your time to benefit your family and yourself? Would you rather go golfing on the weekend or cut your grass? Would you rather spend every single weekend you have all summer installing a patio, or would you rather a professional do it? I think that’s one massive change.”
Ed and Patrick talk about everything from the popularity of shows on HGTV, how things have changed in the landscape industry over the years, and what changes Ed predicts for the future. Ed gives some great advice for those looking to become entrepreneurs and how to prioritize and organize your day for success, and talks about his favourite books. Give it a listen and let us know what you think!
